CYGNET BAY PEARL FARM

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm has got it all. It’s full of history and natural beauty and has been a must-see destination for decades for all who ply the western flank of the Kimberley, whether by 4WD or boat.

Visitors have the chance to immerse themselves in the fascinating history of the original Australian-owned pearl farm, which has been operated by a single family for four generations.

Set upon the backdrop of the Buccaneer Archipelago’s glistening white shores and iridescent green tides, you’ll never want to leave!

THE LOCATION: The particular tidal flow of King Sound has made it the ultimate place to cultivate pearls – a fact discovered when the first pearlers arrived here some 140 years ago. Here at ‘lands end’ you’ll find one of the most famous pearl farms anywhere on earth.

THE HISTORY: Back in 1946 Dean Brown, the pearl farm’s founder, discovered Cygnet Bay while navigating the Kimberley’s pristine western coastline in a wooden lugger.

Dean’s pearling dreams were realised in these waters with the founding of the first Australian owned and run South Sea pearl farm. Cygnet Bay pioneered cultured pearl farming in Australia, and more than 70 years later Dean’s family continues to hold the torch, maintaining one of only three commercial pearl farms still operating in Western Australia.

THINGS TO DO: Take a peal farm tour, learn about pearl shell carving and its significance the local Bardi people, or take a pearl grading lesson.

The two-hour Sea Safaris depart from Cygnet Bay and take guests aboard the amphibious Sealegs vessels – a wonderful way to experience the pristine Kimberley coastline.

Extend your stay with a Sunset in Style cruise, or if you’re feeling adventurous book a spot on the Giant Tides Tour.

Enjoy a lazy day hiring a dinghy and cruising the shallows at your leisure.

THE ACCOMMODATION: Immerse yourself in the history of the place and book at a stay at the rustic Pearlers Shacks.

There are also comfortable safari tents available if a glamping getaway is more your speed, a tranquil caravan and camping area for family bookings and even the Master Pearlers Private Retreat if you’re looking to splash out and enjoy your privacy and a little luxury.
