Just 160km west of Sydney, the historic town of Rydal is located near Lake Lyell and close by to the Blue Mountains hub of Lithgow.

While the township might be a little slow-paced, the tracks surrounding the lake and the nearby Cox River make for hours of interesting exploring, while the real challenge is found when attempting to summit the nearby Mount Walker in your 4WD.

A number of fantastic campsites are littered along the nearby Lake Lyell’s  pretty foreshore, and it’s known to be stocked with a bounty of rainbow and brown trout, so make sure to pack the fishing gear for an epic weekend of 4WDing, fishing and camping just two hours drive from Sydney’s CBD.

STUFF TO DO

4WDING: The biggest offroad challenge in the region is the Unimog Hill track up Mount Walker, rumoured to be the track on which the local army unit test out their military spec Mercedes Unimogs.

Obviously this track is only suitable for experienced drivers and heavily modified vehicles, attempt it if you dare!

FISHING is very popular for introduced rainbow and brown trout in Lake Lyell and the nearby Cox River. Both species of trout are known to be present in good numbers and can be targeted on baits, lures and flies.

Beginner anglers can try their hand at catching these pretty European fish on fresh earthworm baits fished either on the bottom or suspended under a float.
