IRON RANGE CABINS, LOCKHART RIVER

Iron Range Cabins, in conjunction with Lockhart River Airport, are owned and managed by the Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council.

The cabins are modern, perfectly clean and comfortable, and conveniently located adjacent to the Lockhart River Airport.

So whether you’re driving here under your own steam, or flying in directly to explore this unspoiled corner of Cape York, this is the ideal spot to pull up stumps for a few days, get comfortable and learn about the region.

The cosy cabins are located just five minutes from the Lockhart River township, so all supplies are within easy reach, and you’ll enjoy the spectacular backdrop of Kutimi Payamu (Iron Range) National Park from right outside your door.

THE LOCATION: Lockhart River is a coastal Aboriginal community located on the east coast of the Cape York Peninsula, approximately 800 clicks north of Cairns by road, or an hour and a half by air.

Lockhart River is the northernmost town on Australia’s east coast, and the community is located about two kilometres inland from Quintell Beach, and adjacent to Iron Range National Park.

THE ACCOMMODATION: All cabins are self-contained, well appointed and equipped for self-catering. Choose from a selection of studio-sized cabins, two-bedroom cabins, double ensuite and twin ensuite rooms.

All rooms are equipped with ensuite bathrooms with linen + towels supplied, air conditioning, TV, bar fridge, microwave, cooktop + all kitchen facilities.

Complimentary breakfast packs supplied including tea & coffee, cereal, milk + sugar.

FACILITIES: Basic supplies including toiletries, drinks, snacks and souvenirs are available for sale from reception. Meals are available to all guests from Monday – Thursday each week – see the news feed at lhrac.com.au for weekly menus.

Cabins are set up for self-catering and goods can be purchased from the Lockhart River General Store.

WiFi is included in nightly rates and each guest can request a WiFi code. Laundry facilities are available with coin operated washers and dryers provided for guest use. Communal barbeque area is available for all guests to use, within outdoor garden area.

Car hire is available from the airport via Lockhart River Car Hire.

IRON RANGE NP: Iron Range, or Kutimi Payamu, National Park is one of Australia’s best-kept secrets, and one of the most fascinating places to visit in the Cape York region.

The park is richly bio diverse and home to an astonishing 500 native species, which flourish in the natural sanctuary, isolated from the rest of Australia through the northern summer monsoon.

The park’s jutting granite slopes, with lowlands cloaked in dense rainforest, form an impressive backdrop to the region, which is criss-crossed with a network of pristine waterways ending abruptly with a stretch of pearly white, palm-fringed beaches stretching as far as the eye can see.

The park’s lowlands are home to myriad rare plants and animals, as well as birds peculiar only to this region and Papua New Guinea.

LOCKHARD RIVER AIRPORT: Lockhart River Airport is located adjacent to Iron Range Cabins and services passenger and private flights 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

The airport is equipped with a 1500m sealed and secure all weather runway with 24-hour access.

During the wet season, when road access can be cut off for months at a time, the airport plays a key role in ensuring the community has access to vital services and supplies.
